NW Natural Gas Interceptor Trench Remediation Project
Portland, OR
Presented To: Aponowich, Driscoll & Associates, Inc. with Sevenson Environmental Services, Inc. (Contractor/Operator)
Presented By: American Academy of Environmental Engineers Scientists
ADA and Sevenson Environmental Services (contractor) have been working on the NW Natural Gas site in Portland Oregon since 2008 on an extensive remediation project, removing pollutants from the site being discharged into the Willamette River via groundwater.
In 2020 and 2021, it was determined that the groundwater flow patterns had changed over 8 years of operation. Additional measures were necessary to prevent this groundwater source from reaching the river. This groundwater showed much higher pollutant levels than existing flows. A new pretreatment system was required to collect and treat the so-called “Interceptor Trench” groundwater. The new system would then be tied into the existing Pretreatment Plant and ultimately pumped to the Main Treatment Plant for further treatment and final discharge.
Key Takeaways from the project are:
- Alternative air stripping methods were not deemed to be feasible due to the iron fouling which would occur.
- While diffused-air type air strippers are relatively rare and their performance not extensively documented, the Interceptor Trench unit has shown that, properly designed, a diffused air system can produce remarkable organics removal results, even with high solids in the wastewater.
- The iron in the groundwater was oxidized effectively and used as a no-cost method of removing heavy metals.
- The higher-than predicted removal of semi-volatile PAHs in the diffused-air unit has doubled the life of the liquid phase activated carbon system downstream.
- Since the Interceptor Trench project was commissioned, it has intercepted and successfully treated over 150 million gallons of polluted groundwater.
- The plant discharge to the Willamette River has continually met the NPDES standards, many of which are below drinking water standards. The NPDES permit limits are summarized in a following section.
Sevenson presented USACE NE District’s Bunker Hill Award
In recognition of the remediation work conducted to date at the Raymark Superfund site, Stratford, Connecticut, Sevenson’s Project Team was presented with the Bunker Hill Award by the USACE New England District. The team’s professionalism and dedication to the project and surrounding community has garnered the trust of project stakeholders and the public. Sevenson’s efforts contributed to making the community a safer and cleaner place by removing approximately 100,000 cubic yards of contaminated soils from the 28 properties within the town as well as nearby Ferry Creek.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 1 New England Regional Administrator, David W. Cash, was joined by members of the Connecticut Congressional delegation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the Mayor of Stratford, and local community members to highlight the significant progress made at the site through funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The officials toured the remediated properties and participated in a roundtable conversation with local community members to discuss the positive impacts that the cleanup has had on the town. A ceremonial removal of a Public Health Advisory sign which had been posted decades ago to warn against exposure to Raymark contamination in the upstream portion of Ferry Creek but is no longer needed since this portion of the creek has been cleaned up.
“This unprecedented funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has allowed EPA and its partners to deliver on our promise to protect the community from legacy contamination, as well as cleanup and restore land for reuse in Stratford,” said EPA New England Regional Administrator David W. Cash. “Though there’s still a long road ahead of us, we’re looking forward to continuing full steam ahead, restoring additional properties and bringing the Raymark cleanup to completion.”
Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding for the Stratford, Connecticut site propelled the cleanup forward, thus far EPA and its partners have been able to complete the following activities:
- More than 100,000 cubic yards of contamination excavated and removed.
- 28 properties remediated and restored, including 12 active businesses.
- 2,000 LF of sediment from Ferry Creek was mechanically removed and currently being restored to its natural habitat by planting wetland seed, live stakes, and ~1,000 trees and shrubs.
- Over 10,000 air samples were collected from 9 monitoring stations to confirm the air remained safe.
- Provided 30 to 50 jobs each workday including engineers, scientists, machine operators, laborers and truck drivers.
