Treatability Study & Laboratory Services

Performing state-of-the-art solidification/stabilization and dewatering treatability studies

Since 1989, Sevenson has performed in-house treatability studies at our state-of-the-art environmental laboratory. With extensive expertise in hazardous waste remediation science, Sevenson’s lab staff develops new treatment techniques and reviews proposed treatment methodologies.

Through treatability studies, project schedules may be shortened, which can often reduce costs. Treatability studies also enable Sevenson to engineer complete project-specific dewatering, wastewater treatment, and stabilization/solidification systems. Components of the treatability study can include the following evaluations:

Viability Study – Demonstrates the technology’s capacity to treat waste and supports the development of full-scale budget estimates.

Bench-Scale Study – Optimizes treatment on representative samples, validates effectiveness to stakeholders, meets USEPA QA/QC Level II requirements, and supports accurate bid estimates.

Engineering-Scale Study – Replicates optimized bench-scale process results on a larger sample quantity to meet additional client, consultant, and regulatory agency requirements.

Pilot-Scale Study – Performed on site using scaled processing equipment. This phase evaluates customized material handling methods for various waste types and supports regulatory acceptance of the proposed process.

Sevenson’s treatability study lab focuses on three primary services:

Soils Stabilization and Geotechnical Treatability Studies

Sevenson conducts geotechnical treatability studies using a range of reagents to support project objectives. Studies range from small-scale testing to pass paint filter tests required for landfill disposal, to large-scale in-situ solidification/stabilization evaluations focused on achieving requirements for unconfined compressive strength and permeability. The results confirm that project treatment specifications and timelines can be met as well as ensure safety for on-site project personnel and the equipment used to stabilize material.

Dewatering Treatability Studies

Dewatering sediment is a critical component of Sevenson environmental dredging services. Sevenson conducts treatability testing using a variety of dewatering technologies. These include plate and frame filter presses, geomembrane filter tubes/bags, centrifuges, bag filters, and mobile treatability units. Our technicians are highly skilled in optimization of flocculation and coagulation processes, as well as identification and application of the most effective methods for dewatering sediment.

Heavy Metal Treatment and Stabilization Utilizing Our Patented MAECTITE™ Process

Sevenson can receive untreated samples and perform comprehensive in-house testing, including analysis using our advanced inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) and Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) instruments.
