The Newhall Street neighborhood comprises an area that historically consisted of wetlands
and low-lying areas. Waste materials were used to fill these areas from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s.
Subsequently, homes, public buildings, and parks were built on and next to the historic fill areas. The fill
material contained contaminants consisting primarily of metals, PAHs and PCBs.

As the self-performing prime contractor of this design-build project, Sevenson excavated
106,000 CY of contaminated materials from an 18-block area that consisted of 249 residential properties
to depths of 4 ft. BGS. Crews transported and disposed of all soils. Prior to excavation, Sevenson
performed waste characterization and identified areas of the neighborhood with buried UXO/munitions
waste and high concentrations of lead. Sevenson assisted with the removal of UXOs and utilized
Sevenson’s patented MAECTITE ® process before disposal. Sevenson also removed underground storage
tanks at multiple properties. Restoration of all properties to pre-existing conditions was a significant
component of the scope of work. This included landscaping, patios, decks, fencing, driveways, porches,
sidewalks, etc.
